LEARNING HUB / BATTERIES

kW, kWh and Ah: three different questions

Understand power, stored energy and why battery voltage matters.

Power is the rate

kW describes how quickly energy is supplied or consumed. kWh describes an amount of energy. A 1 kW load operating for 2 hours uses 2 kWh, before accounting for system losses.

Read Ah with voltage

For a nominal comparison, energy in kWh = voltage × amp-hours ÷ 1,000. A 51.2 V, 200 Ah rating corresponds to 10.24 kWh of nominal energy. Available energy at the loads will be lower because of operating limits and losses.

Use the numbers together

Battery energy helps explain duration; the permitted discharge power limits what can run at once. Ask for both values. Treat a simple runtime calculation as an illustration rather than a guaranteed backup time.
